MM104 Cheech and Chong with Zoot

Cheech and Chong is the name of the first comedy album released by Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong in 1971. The album was nominated for Best Comedy Recording at the 14th Grammy Awards, but lost to Lily Tomlin's This is a Recording (featuring her character Ernestine the Telephone Operator).

The album's most famous routine (titled "Waiting for Dave") consists of a situation in which Cheech (playing "Dave") attempts to get Chong to open the door because he's got "the stuff" and he thinks the cops saw him. A dazed Chong doesn't register Cheech's pleas to let him in when he identifies himself, responding, "Dave's not here!"

"Waiting for Dave" was parodied by comedian Ray D'Ariano, whose 1972 LP Are You On Something? featured the track "Cheech and Ernie". As the title implies, the cut finds Bert knocking at the door and calling out for Ernie to let him in because he's got "the stuff" and "that big bird" saw him coming over. The oblivious Ernie responds that "Bert's not here right now."
