"The R Machine" is a Sesame Street sketch performed by Ernie and Bert. Bert has constructed an automatic "R" detector: a machine which rings a bell whenever somebody mentions the letter "R", or a word beginning with said letter. Seeing how it works gives Ernie the inspiration to ad-lib a riddle chock full of "R" words. Bert warns him not to talk too fast, but Ernie proceeds to tell another "R" riddle and the machine breaks down. Even after going up in smoke, the machine keeps responding to the letter R.
