"The Grouch News Network"
GNN, which stands for Grouch News Network, is the Grouch version of CNN, the Cable News Network. The network's motto is "All grouchy, all disgusting, all yucky news, all the time." Newscasters of GNN include Oscar the Grouch of Sesame Street, as well as Grouch versions of more notable broadcasters including Walter Cranky, Dan Rather-not, Meredith Beware-a, and Diane Spoiler. Tyler Bunch voices the station's announcer.
Oscar is the opening GNN reporter in Episode 4160. He gathers a lot of grouchy stories but accidentally keeps telling the people he's interviewing the advantage of their problems. Oscar thinks he is going to be ruined. However, because all the stories are so disgusting, Grundgetta comes to GNN headquarters (Oscar's trash can) to tell Oscar that he actually won the Phlegmmy Award for the grouchiest news stories.
Although the target audience is Grouches, both Gordon and Bob are semi-regular viewers; Gordon admits he tunes in to get differing perspectives on certain issues.
Notes
- Additional GNN segments were scripted to be used as inserts in other episodes, written by Belinda Ward. These include:[1]
- "The Basketball Star": Oscar delivers a sports update with star player of the Grumpies, Grundgetta. They are joined by a real NBA basketball player, who learns that the way Grouches play basketball is to miss the basket. The athlete tries to play their way, but manages to make the right shot each time. The Grouches assure them that with practice, they'll be as good at missing as Grundgetta.
- "The Orange Story": Reporter Oscar finds Zoe and the kids playing a game by making up rhymes for different colors, when they get stuck on finding a rhyme for "orange." Oscar inadvertently gives them the idea to make up their own words to rhyme.
