First Mate is, appropriately, the first mate of the Bookaneer crew in Episode 4135 of Sesame Street. He takes his orders from the Bookaneer Captain and is good friends with Salty Dog.

A dashing lad, First Mate appears to do the bulk of the reading for the crew when they are on a treasure hunt, reading the map and signs along the way. In his personal time he prefers to read rhyming text (including a pirate version of "Humpty Dumpty") and plays the piccolo.

His design and flamboyant characteristics are inspired by Johnny Depp's character Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
