DreamWorks Animation is the animation division of DreamWorks Pictures. Designed to compete with The Walt Disney Company in the animated feature arena, it was formed through a co-production deal with computer animation studio Pacific Data Images (PDI), which produced their first feature Antz (with the voice of Woody Allen) in 1998. They simultaneously had a hand drawn animation division, later dissolved which the same year produced The Prince of Egypt. PDI produced the studio's second CG feature, Shrek, launching their biggest franchise (including the spin-off Puss in Boots), and would merge with DreamWorks Animation as their main in-house CG studio until 2015.

DreamWorks also distributed three features from Aardman Animations (known for Wallace and Gromit), including Chicken Run and Aardman's first CG feature, Flushed Away. Between its various animation facilities, DreamWorks Animation produced the Madagascar franchise, the Kung Fu Panda series, How to Train Your Dragon and sequels, Over the Hedge, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, Trolls, and others. The TV division initially released the Steven Spielberg produced series Toonsylvania and Invasion America in 1998, before eventually focusing on their franchises and acquired properties.
