Big Bag on Cartoon Network
Cartoon Network is a cable channel owned by Warner Bros. Entertainment. The channel showcases animated programming, originally primarily drawing from the Warner and Hanna-Barbera cartoon libraries. It also created the spin-off channel Boomerang.
The network joined with Children's Television Workshop to produce Big Bag, a combination of Muppet segments and animation that aired from 1996 to 1998. Cartoon Network India co-funded and aired Galli Galli Sim Sim, an Indian co-production of Sesame Street.
A proposed animated series based on The Dark Crystal was planned in the mid-2000s for the network's former Toonami programming block, but was ultimately abandoned. A series of shorts produced by The Jim Henson Company, Hotdog TV, briefly aired on the channel in the summer of 2010.
The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted aired on the network in November 2016; the former premiered during its "Film Feast" Thanksgiving block.[1]
The Sesame Street special Elmo's Playdate premiered on the network on April 14, 2020 as a simulcast alongside other Warner-owned networks. The network has also aired The Not-Too-Late Show with Elmo and Mecha Builders as part of its "Cartoonito" line-up.
Internationally, Fraggle Rock aired on Boomerang in Australia and the UK, and The Muppet Babies aired in Italy.[2][3][4] Cartoonito UK (an international spinoff channel) has also aired Doozers and Sesame Street.[5][6]
Muppet Mentions
- In the 2003 special Cartoon Network's Greatest Musical Moments, the announcer segues from a clip of the Looney Tunes short "One Froggy Evening" to an except featuring Paul Williams in Dexter's Laboratory by saying, "Speaking of frogs, here's Paul Williams, who knows a song or two about frogs," alluding to his Muppet work.
- On November 10, 2018, the anniversary of Sesame Street's premiere, Cartoon Network social media posted an illustration of characters from several of the channel's shows as Muppets gathered around a lamppost mimicking the Sesame Street sign. These include Jake the Dog (from Adventure Time) as Big Bird, Ruby and Amethyst (Steven Universe) as Elmo and The Count, Gumball and Darwin (The Amazing World of Gumball) as Bert and Ernie, Beast Boy (Teen Titans Go!) as Oscar, and Ice Bear (We Bare Bears) as Cookie Monster.
- In the 2026 adult animated horror short, Duck, created for the revival of the dedicated shorts program, Cartoon Cartoons, an ignorant English tow truck driver is shown a vision after she supposedly ran over a duck on the road. She is not phased by the sight, quipping back, “All this Muppets Christmas Carol shite ‘cause I totaled a stupid little ducky?”
